We worked with Cantata Music Education to do a film about their local choirs and orchestra. Having been mesmerised by the profound influence on the local communities that the organisation had, we set about recording a film that captured what it means to be part of their Cantata.

A love letter to the community.

A family in song.

We follow some of the people that call their local amateur choirs and orchestra a place of friendship, support and respite as they rehearse for their biggest performance yet. Catherine Silman and colleagues at Cantata bring together singers and musicians to create music that enriched their soul and pushes them to see what can be achieved by amateurs.

This is a look at what the choirs mean to their members, and the lead up to performing “Family in Song”, written for the choirs based on suggestions from the people most affected by them.

The aim of the film was to share true stories of the power of music in the lives of ordinary people. Some of our members spoke of the ways in which music, and belonging to a choir or orchestra, has helped them through challenging life transitions and given them a new purpose.
